THE GOSPEL OF LUKE
INTRODUCTION
WRITER: Luke. It is generally conceded
that Luke wrote this gospel. The "church fathers" attribute
the gospel to Luke.
- Find out what you can about Luke in other
scriptural references in the N.T. – his nationality, profession, etc.
- What other book in the N.T. was written
by him? Demonstrate from the books themselves how the same writer wrote
both books.
- In the second book Luke wrote, there are
sections where he uses the plural pronoun "we" which indicates
that he accompanied Paul during some of his missionary journeys. Find
and list those references.
- To whom is the gospel of Luke addressed?
What was there about this man that made him noteworthy?
- About what time was the epistle written?
From where do you think it could have been written?
- How does Luke differ from the other three
gospels?

was accurate? (compare 1 John 1:1-3)
- Of what tribe are both Zacharias and Elizabeth?

and Elizabeth were to have?

Elizabeth did Gabriel appear to Mary?
- What was Mary told by Gabriel?
- Why did she think this was not possible?
- Describe the child to whom Mary would
give birth?
- What was the hometown of Mary?
- She arose and went to see whom?
- What happened to Elizabeth when she heard
the salutation of Mary?
- It is said that Elizabeth was "filled
with the Holy Spirit," that John would be "filled with the
Holy Spirit" and also that Zacharias was "filled with the
Holy Spirit." Explain what that expression means and does not mean?
- Relate the scene at the birth of John.
What did the cousins and neighbors want to
call the baby? What name did Elizabeth say he should have? What name
did Zacharias give to the baby?
Why was Zacharias now able to speak?

(vv. 67-79) – explain "whereby the day spring from on high hath
