THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

CHAPTER SIX

  1. On what day did the disciples walk through the cornfields and eat the corn as they went? Of what were they accused by some of the Pharisees? Was it a lawful charge?

  2. How did Jesus respond to their accusation? Explain the argument Jesus made about how David could do what was not lawful to do.

  3. What did Jesus mean when He said that He was "Lord also of the sabbath."?

  4. On another sabbath Jesus entered into a synagogue and taught. What man was present who became the focus of attention? How did Jesus know their thoughts? Why were the scribes and Pharisees watching Jesus? How did Jesus deal with their desire to have somewhat of which to accuse him in this matter?

  5. In reading this context, do you think that Jesus might have deliberately challenged the scribes and Pharisees on the sabbath? If so, why?

  6. How long did Jesus pray? The next day whom did He call to follow him? What did He call these men?

  7. From what places and regions were people coming to hear and be healed of their diseases?

  8. The teaching that follows is known as "The Beatitudes" (vv. 20-22). In the following statements supply the second half of the pronouncement made by Jesus.

    1. "Blessed be ye poor: for _____________________________________________

    2. "Blessed are ye that hunger now: for _____________________________________________

    3. "Blessed are ye that week now: for _____________________________________________

    4. "Blessed are ye when men shall hate you…behold _____________________________________________

  9. List the woes pronounced upon those mentioned in vv. 24-26.

  10. In this section, Jesus employs two words that stand as opposites - "blessed" and "woe" - which word would you want to hear Heaven say of you?

  11. Jesus' teaching in vv. 27-36, He discusses our behavior to those who are our enemies. How should we feel toward them? How should we treat them? He uses as a basis for all His teaching in this context the action of God toward ALL men. How does God treat both the evil and good in this world?

  12. How are we to act in showing mercy?

  13. Explain v. 37. Note that in Matthew's account (ch. 7:1-ff) that the idea of judging is tied with the "mote hunting" so, in your explanation here, put vv. 41 and 42 together with v. 37.

  14. How should we give? (v. 38). What kind of action can we expect in return based on how we give to others?

  15. What happens when the blind lead the blind? What does Jesus mean by this statement?

  16. Explain the figure of the trees in vv. 43-45.

  17. 16. If a man calls Jesus "Lord" what should he be doing?

  18. The man who hears and does what Jesus says is likened to what?

  19. The man who hears and does not do is likened to what?
