Bargain Basement Sales
Ten suits for sale -- $5.22 each; ten sport coats for sale -- $2.22 each so the clothing store sale read in 1967. This was my first experience at such sales so I got to the store 40 minutes early and stood patiently waiting with a dozen others.
Finally the door opened. I learned several things that day. I learned that you grab first and see if it fits later. I also learned that it does not pay to be polite, because the nice ladies you allow ahead of you will leave you nothing that lesson I learned too late. I fought my way to the counter frantically, blindly grabbing for the prey and my hands finally grasped some material. When I pulled my arm back, I found that I had latched on to a nice looking, brown, wool suit. There we stood eyeing each other like suspicious wolves jealously guarding their part of the kill. I retreated to a corner to examine what I had claimed. It looked all right and so I tried it on (just the coat, mind you) amazingly it fit!!! I could hardly believe it. Out of all the chaos I had been lucky enough to acquire a $50 suit for $5.22 and it really fit. I had the fever then but when I went back to hunt again, all I saw was clean counter and, from the corner of my eye, I got a fleeting glimpse of a sweet, little old grandma walking away with two suits under each arm.
Now, I have said all that to make a point. How peculiar people are who are
so enthusiastic about clothing bargains but so disinterested in the greatest bargain of all the free gift of God in Christ Jesus. God made the provisions and offers the free gift to man. It is free! All man has to do to receive it is believe and obey Gods conditions (John 8:24; Matthew 7:21-23; Mark 16:15-16; Romans 6:17-18; Hebrews 5:8-9).
I suppose that the reason for mans lack of zeal to receive salvation is that he can see the immediate value of bargain basement sales but lacks the foresight to see the eternal treasures (Matthew 6:19-21). Jesus said, He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth is life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal, (John 12:25). Any bargain hunter should easily determine the greatest bargain of all and willingly give up all that he cannot keep to gain what cannot be lost (Matthew 13:45-46). Jim R. Everett
