STUDY MATERIAL ON "INSTITUTIONAL" ISSUES

by Jim R. Everett

LESSON TOPICS TO BE STUDIED:

  1. An overview of church history -- from the first century, with its issues, to the 1800's in America and the so-called "restoration." What really caused the division with the Christian Church? Where is the Christian Church today? What was the real reason for the thrust to get benevolent institutions into church budgets in the 1940's?

  2. Clarifying the problem -- what "institutional" issues are really about

  3. God Authorized congregational organization -- how it is violated by "institutionalism"

  4. Review of "hermeneutics" -- how we understand and apply Bible authority to religious practices

  5. The "treasury" -- collecting funds to be used by the congregation and how the congregation is to distribute the funds

  6. An examination of James 1:27, in its context -- what it teaches and what it does not teach

PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS FOR CLASS ON "INSTITUTIONAL ISSUES"

  1. Do you believe it is wrong for congregations to support other institutions, such as colleges, a missionary society, or orphans' home? Why or why not?

  2. Are you opposed to orphans' homes?

  3. Do you believe it is all right for a congregation to give financial aid to those who are not Christians? Why or why not?

  4. Do you believe it would be all right for this congregation to take money from other congregations in this area that it might be able to put on a TV program to preach the gospel in our area that none of the congregations would be able to do otherwise? Why or why not

  5. Are you opposed to preaching the gospel on the TV?

  6. Do you think it would be all right for this congregation to raise money to preach the gospel by having a garage sale? Why or why not?

  7. Do you believe it is unscriptural to use instrumental music in worship to God? Why or why not
