Address To Participants

Tab SpacerI would like to impress upon you the need for our pursuing the format which has been laid out for us to follow. Each of you represents himself and speaks for himself, not a party, nor even a friendship. None of you speaks for the brotherhood nor is our attempt in these presentations to solve anything for the brotherhood. From very clear thinking, each of you is to seek to set forth in definitive terms your understanding of the subjects under consideration. To this you have agreed for two purposes: (1) that a combination of the speeches may be put in written form for others to study; and (2) that by this association and study format, we may develop a greater confidence in each person's stand for truth.

Tab SpacerTo accomplish those goals, not only is what you say important but how you listen is equally
critical. In any process of communication between people, listening is essential to understanding. Listen carefully to what each speaker says. Listen to understand and not to misunderstand. Listen as a brother who will put the best construction on what is being said -- brotherly love requires that. Only by listening can we learn from each other.

Tab SpacerAlso listen to yourselves. Sometimes we choose words to convey our thoughts which are both inflammatory and offensive -- words that wound instead of heal. We should always express ourselves by words that are gracious, seasoned with salt and spoken from a heart directed by heavenly wisdom. Each of you is responsible for the words you choose to use to convey your understanding. Choose your words wisely to bring honor and glory to God.
