Wisdom from an “Oldie”

Almost a century ago the Mills Brothers recorded a song entitled “You Always Hurt the One You Love.”  The lyrics included these lines:

You always hurt the one you love, the one you shouldn’t hurt at all.

You always take the sweetest rose, and crush it till the petals fall.

You always break the kindest heart, with a hasty word you can’t recall,

So if I broke your heart last night, it’s because I love you most of all.

That is probably meant to portray some man apologizing to his wife or girlfriend for something he regrets foolishly saying to her.  Unfortunately, there are many situations where that sentiment is appropriate.  We can indeed hurt the kindest heart with a hasty word that can’t be recalled.

Is there someone who you truly love, but you have hurt with careless words?  Swallow your pride and tell them you’re sorry.  You might even borrow some of the words from this oldie.
