Humility

Galatians 6:3 ESV

“For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”

The delusion of grandeur: Thinking you are greater than you really are.

Ever been guilty of that? I know I have. Typically I will have that feeling right before I start a round of golf. Very soon after, I am humbled and wonder why I ever thought those things to begin with. Seriously now, I do not mean to make light of the sin of pride… on the contrary.

 Proverbs 16:18 ESV

“Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

The scriptures tell us this is a serious issue and I am afraid that it is not looked at that way, especially in this day and age where almost everyone is consumed with their selves and have that “look at me attitude”.  Are we all guilty of this?  Probably not, but with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. ... helping to facilitate this behavior, we must be careful not to develop this attitude.  I am not saying that we should not use this technology, but that we must be mindful of how we use it.  It can be a wonderful way to communicate with loved ones, friends from long ago, and new friends. It can also become a problem, a source of pride, if we are not disciplined about how we use it.

When we look closely at this we may see that we post a comment, a picture, or click like on something that can reveal things about our character or where our heart is.

 Proverbs 26:12 ESV

“Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. “

All of us have things that we are knowledgeable about and good at, but we should not be prideful in these things.  Instead, we should be humble and noble people sharing our gifts and helping others to be better if we can.  Ever literally tried to pat yourself on the back?  It’s not easy to do…….. hmm I wonder why? Maybe because we are not supposed to!

Philippians 2:3 ESV

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Proverbs 16:5 ESV

“Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.”

Humility comes from the heart it is not a sign of weakness to be humble and meek.  I think it shows strength to have this kind of mindset. How easy is it to puff yourself up over others and think you’re better than they are for this reason or that. On the other hand, to prop others up and mean it shows discipline, tenderness, and a caring humble heart.

Proverbs 27:2 ESV

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth: a stranger, and not your own lips.”

There is something about someone else praising you. It feels great to be told “good job” from your boss or from your mom and dad for making a good grade in school.

Consider what it will be like when Jesus passes judgment on you and pats you on the back and says, “well done good and faithful servant” as you enter through the gates of heaven.

Amen!!
